When I was selected to edit our annual year-end issue, I suggested a big revamp of the style. Instead of featuring dozens of short items about each field of science we had covered that year, we curated a list of the 25 most exciting, groundbreaking stories of the year—a format that stuck in subsequent years due to its greater focus and visual appeal.
